11 NRIs who planned to join IS detained in the UAE

CRIisSome 11 Indians are detained in the UAE since early August on charges of planning to join Islamic State (IS) and recruiting, financing and providing logistics to those willing to join the outfit.

This came after 2 Indians from north Kerala were detained as part of the same group and were deported from the UAE.

Intelligence sources say the UAE security services happened upon two groups of Indians based in Abu Dhabi and Dubai who were involved in sharing issues pertaining to IS on social media, and were trying to establish online contact with IS leaders.

Of those detained 8 were in Abu Dhabi and 5 in Dubai. UAE authorities suspect the Indians were panning to travel to Syria via Yemen or Turkey.
