Duli Hembrom, 13, has written a letter begging her head teacher to save her from becoming a child bride.
Reports say the girl tried but failed to convince her parents against the match, so she turned to the school, saying the wedding will stop her completing her education at the Milan Mithi Uchha Vidyalaya.
In her letter she said she took an oath when she was admitted to the school that she would not marry before she turned 18, and she does not want to get married now. Her father however said the wedding would go ahead as child marriage is common in their society and it was difficult to find a suitable match for a grown-up girl.
Jharkhand state in which Duli lives, is one of the worst for child marriage in India with over 40 percent of women married by the age of 18 according to UN statistics. Although India has criminalised child marriage, few prosecutions have been successful.
