14 students of a Pune college drowned after a strong current swept them away at Murud beach in Raigad district. The college principal announced that search operations have been called off and the bodies of the 14 drowned students were recovered. The rest of the students returned to the college.
The principal said the seniors, who were studying computer science, had gone on a college-sponsored annual picnic accompanied by five staff members and other support staff.
The Coast Guard launched a relief and rescue effort and the Coast Guards interceptor craft and a Chetak helicopter went to the spot to search for survivors. The Indian Navy also pressed in a Seaking aircraft for the rescue.
