According to data released by the Indian embassy in Doha a total of 279 NRIs died in Qatar last year, up from 241 fatalities recorded in 2013, and 237 in 2012. The data did not provide details about the causes of the deaths of the largest expatriate group in that country. 87 NRIs are in the Central Prison serving their terms and 113 are awaiting deportation at the Search and Follow Up Department. Since the beginning of 2015 the embassy has received 280 complaints from NRIs seeking redress for their problems. According to the embassy estimates, at the end of 2012 some 500,000 Indian nationals lived in Qatar, which is approximately 26 percent of Qatar's total population of 1.9 million.
