61 custodial deaths recorded in Gujarat from 2011-12

MERAPOLcustodAccording to a report submitted from the State Human Rights Commission to a Legislative Assembly, a total of 61 custodial deaths took place in Gujarat in the year 2011-12.

Of the deaths in police or judicial custody, 51 were from natural causes, 7 were suicides and 3 were unnatural or doubtful deaths. Of these 8 deaths were while in police custody and 53 while in judicial custody.

24 of the deaths, one of which was unnatural or doubtful, were reported in Ahmedabad city alone. Vadodara city had 10 custodial deaths and Junagadh city saw 4 custodial deaths.

7 cases of suicides in custody were recorded, one each in Ahmedabad rural, Mehasana, Rajkot rural, Junagadh, Amreli, Valsad and Navsari districts.

The report lists several cases where the State Human Rights Commission had taken suo motu action based on newspaper reports.
