Accused godman Rampal in judicial custody

Rampal, 63, claimed he was a reincarnation of the 15th century mystic poet Kabir, and renamed himself Satguru Rampal Ji Maharaj. He is said to have amassed assets worth over Rs.1 billion. He has over 2 million followers in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. Besides his ashrams in Rohtak and Barwala another was under construction and he is said to have properties in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has cancelled the 2006 bail of guru Rampal Dass and placed him in judicial custody. The Court also directed the police to file an affidavit detailing the operation carried out to arrest Rampal from his ashram, along with damages, injuries to people, details of arms and ammunition in the ashram and loss of property. Rampal who was moved to a police station where he was put behind bars, insists he is innocent of all charges. The newly installed BJP government in Haryana has started investigations into reports Rampal built his ashram in Barwala without the necessary clearance from government departments. He is also said to be close to outlawed Maoist guerrillas who visit his ashram. The guerrillas are also believed to have taught his security supporters how to make explosive devices.
