Action against NRI students extending stay illegally in US

NRIcrimeThe US is to take action against 306 Indian students caught in a sting operation by the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, for trying to extend their stay in the county illegally.

A State Department Deputy Spokesman Mark Toner, said for the most part they came on legitimate visas and when they were in the country some sought to extend their stay in the US.

Some 21 brokers and middle men including 11 of Indian origin were arrested as a result of the sting.

Mr Toner said the Indian students were issued visas by US diplomatic missions in India to study in recognized American educational institutions and not in the fake university created by the Department of Homeland Security as part of the sting operation.
