Air India’s maiden direct flight to San Francisco was welcomed heartily, as it is the first Indian carrier to directly connect to the US’ West Coast, thereby reducing travel time by nearly 6 hours. Its welcome to the 230 passengers on board the fight AI 173 included the airport traffic control tower in San Francisco lit up in the Indian tri-colour.
Venkatesan Ashok, Consul General of India, and other officials from India and the US attended a formal ribbon cutting to mark the beginning of the services. The city mayor’s office declared the day ‘Air India Day’ to celebrate the arrival of the flight, that was the first Indian carrier to provide a direct air connection to the West Coast.
Earlier, to celebrate before its departure from Delhi airport, a cake was cut and passengers were presented with a rose bud each.
