Sureshbhai Patel, 57, who was slammed to the ground by police officer Eric Parker in Alabama, had been singled out after a caller reported that "a skinny black guy" was walking in the neighbourhood and peering into garages. Patel who does not speak English was attacked when he did not respond to commands that he did not understand, but he had committed no crime, the Madison police chief said. Patel whose injuries from the attack include partial paralysis has filed a lawsuit that says his civil rights were violated. The Indian government is "extremely disturbed" by the incident, and Sridharan Madhusudhanan the spokesman for the Embassy of India said his office has been in touch with Patel's family, the doctors who are caring for him, and the US Embassy in Delhi. As word of Patel's treatment and injuries spread a website established to help cover medical and other expenses since Patel has no insurance. Officer Eric Parker was arrested and is to be fired.
