Around 1000 cases of cirrhosis of the liver, that is related to alcohol intake, are reported every month in Gujarat where there is total ban on alcohol. Furthermore 80% of the cases are reported in Ahmedabad government and private hospitals.
Cirrhosis is a slow progressing disease where healthy liver tissue is replaced with scar tissue that can lead to organ failure.
Dr Dinesh Joshi of the Civil Hospital says most of the patients are males, and many of them are young habitual drinkers in the age group of 25 to 40. Prolonged alcohol misuse can cause long-term liver damage. In the case of women, Hepatitis B and a sedentary lifestyle are leading causes for liver damage.
