Bhubaneswar has topped the first list of 20 Smart Cities, followed by Pune and Jaipur. The Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu announced the names of the first 20 selected cities to be developed under PM Narendra Modi’s pet project in which he announced his vision to set up 100 smart cities in India.
Other cities on the list include Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Sholapur, Davnagere, Indore, Delhi Municipal Council, Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belagavi, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana and Bhopal.
The smart cities are to be equipped with basic infrastructure and will offer quality of life through smart solutions, including assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, robust IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation and safety.
The government will invest Rs.50,802 crore on the cities and towns over five years.
