In the annual listing of the 101 most powerful Asians in the UK, Sajid Javid, the son of a bus driver who is now the Conservative Party’s rising star, has emerged as UK’s most influential south Asian. PM Cameron’s India diaspora champ Priti Patel is at third position, making her the most powerful Asian woman in the country. The two now make this the first ever Cabinet attended by two second generation south Asians.
The Hinduja brothers are in 2nd place on the list and Laxmi Mittal is 4th followed by sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor. The top 10 has two Nobel prize winners in Sir Venkatraman Ramakrishnan and Malala Yousafzai.
The list features 20 individuals from the media and entertainment fields including Meera Syal, director Gurinder Chadha, actor Dev Patel and film director Asif Kapadia.
Sajid Javid oversaw the installation of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at Parliament Square recently. He is also helping Cameron plan the reception for PM Narendra Modi who is visiting the UK in November.
