Singh, a retired cashier from an Edmonton store said it is the duty of the government to come to their rescue but no help was forthcoming so they ended their life. Referring to the recent suicide of Nishan Singh in Tarn Taran district Singh said he has decided to form a Trust of his life savings. He has also convened a meeting of farmers and social service organisations to discuss the issue. He had also hired an advocate to complete the required formalities after which he will start giving loans to farmers against some surety, but will not charge any interest.
He already runs a school at Goindwal Sahib and does not charge a monthly fee but a nominal fee after harvesting season, as a majority of the students are farmers’ children.
He has also discussed the issue with like minded people in Canada who are keen to help people back home.
