Over 90 percent or nearly 800,000 chemist shops in India downed their shutters in a nationwide strike by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), to protest the online sale of drugs.
The AIOCD president said they allowed just 10 percent of chemist shops to remain open to avoid difficulty to patients.
The Association warned of an indefinite strike if the government does not address the issue within a week and ban online sales of medicines. They also tried to talk to the health ministry about the illegitimate sale of medicines by e-pharmacy companies.
One e-pharmacy store said there is no harm in technology acting as an enabler in offering convenience to customers.
