Pavan Kumar of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh went to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) last year seeking treatment for his daughter who had developed complications in her left kidney. Tests showed that her right kidney was in good condition. A senior surgeon handling the case told the family the kidney had to be removed and in March the doctor performed the surgery during which the kidney was removed. A few days later the patient complained of severe pain and a CT scan showed the absence of both kidneys.
Kumar questioned the doctor who was evasive. He then tried unsuccessfully to speak to the AIIMS administration. He then approached the police.
AAIMS has now constituted a committee of senior professors to investigate the allegations, saying the allegations made are serious and the committee will complete their probe then submit a report to the administration.
Meanwhile the girl has been on dialysis since March 14 last year and is admitted to AIIMS.
