As rain battered Chennai limps back to normalcy with persistent power cuts, food shortages and mourning lost ones, the politicisation of the relief and rescue efforts by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and the AIADMK has outraged many in Tamil Nadu.
People say the relief materials are allowed in certain areas only if and when the packages carry a mandatory sticker with Madam’s face on it. People on Twitter have uploaded images of the AIADMK volunteers pasting the posters and fliers on relief packages to be distributed to the stranded people in and around Chennai.
The tired, disillusioned people gheraoed and heckled senior ministers and later power minister N Viswanathan and Chief Secretary Gannadesikan claimed that relief and rescue work was in full swing, and described the opposition’s criticism as politically motivated.
Earlier a rather tasteless image of Jayalalithaa submerged in water and holding up an infant also went viral.
Meanwhile military personnel, social activists and selfless concerned groups continued supplying food, water and blankets to thousands still trapped in inundated neighbourhoods.
Thankfully the rains let up and water levels in the reservoirs and rivers began to subside, leaving behind widespread destruction and grieving relatives and friends of the victims.
