29 teachers of the private self-financing Aspire College of Advanced Studies at Trithala under Calicut University have resigned in protest, saying they tried to stop students from cheating but were bullied, intimidated and abused by the students who were caught mass copying during the fifth semester BBA and B.Com examinations. The teachers have also written to the varsity Controller of Exams asking that the varsity provide external invigilators to monitor the exams. College principal TP Manoj Kumar said he was trying to persuade the teachers to withdraw their resignations, as they appreciate their attempts to stop the mass copying, and regret that the students resorted to violence and tried to attack the teachers, including lady teachers. Reacting to the developments, Calicut University authorities said the varsity has taken the issue very seriously and have directed a vigilance squad of committee members to direct inspections at the college. This incident has brought the fairness of the examinations being conducted in self-financing colleges under the scanner.
