Complaints from Gulf NRI workers on the increase

The Rajya Sabha was informed by government authorities that complaints from NRI workers in some Gulf countries have increased, with the highest number coming from Qatar followed by Saudi Arabia. There has also been a rise in complaints from Indian workers from Malaysia this year. Oman on the other hand shows a decline in complaints as has Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia, South Sudan, Syria and Thailand. Complaints from Indian workers are generally about non-payment, delayed payment or underpayment of salaries, long working hours, inadequate living conditions, physical harassment, or non-renewal of visas and labour cards. Minister of Overseas India Affairs Sushma Swaraj responded saying violations of the Emigration Act Rules are dealt with seriously, and diplomatic initiatives are raised with host countries to extend the protection of labour laws to workers in the informal sector.
