A controversy is underway over a Padma Shri award conferred on Kerala NRI businessman Sundar Menon, The Kerala High Court has said the award will be confirmed subject to the disposal of a writ petition before it.
The award has been challenged by CK Padmanabha of Kozhikode saying Menon has criminal and cheating cases filed against him in Thrissur East Police Station, for cheating his former business partner CK Menon to the tune of crores. The case is still in the process of investigation.
The petitioner also alleged that there are complaints against Menon for violation of labour contracts as well as a customs case, and he said Sundar Menon’s name was recommended by the Governor of Goa, so there was no effective investigation conducted in Kerala.
The petitioner in a reply affidavit also said the order produced by the Central Government states that Menon was recommended by four persons none of whom are from Goa.
Meanwhile the counsel for Sundar Menon – S Sreekumar said the allegations are baseless and the criminal case against him was registered in Thrissur after the list of names came out, and that the allegations have been levelled only to make sure Menon does not receive the Padma Shri.
