Couple released from Dubai jail with help of NRI donor

prisAn Indian couple in jail since 2010 over unpaid debts after their business failed and they could not meet their financial obligations, has been released after an NRI businessman paid off their debt.

The couple were among seven prisoners freed, after businessman Firoz Merchant came forward with a donation of Dh76,000, to pay off their debts.

The move to help prisoners with financial cases is the result of an announcement by PM Narendra Modi, during his recent visit to the UAE, promising assistance to Indian prisoners.

According to the Indian Community Welfare Committee, of some 400 Indians in Dubai prisons, 25% are imprisoned for financial issues.

Indian officials say they have started talks with the courts in Dubai and the UAE’s NRI community has begun helping free such prisoners.
