Court awards Rs.200,000 compensation to NRI mistakenly detained

INTERbiA year after Dubai NRI Sarah Thomas was detained by immigration officials in Chennai who mistook her for someone else, the Madras High Court awarded her Rs.2 lakh as compensation.

Sarah Thomas was mistaken for one Sara Williams who was involved in a cheating case, and had been absconding for 13 years. Sarah was put in prison and later handed over to the Punular Police of Kerala. .The police realised their blunder and eventually let Sara Thomas off.

She later moved the court for action against the officials but said she did not want any compensation.

Since Sarah Thomas turned down the compensation the Bench directed the state and the central government to pay Rs.1 lakh each to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minster’s Flood Relief Fund.

The Bench said airport authorities should be very careful when they verify the genuineness of travel documents.
