Dalits use suicide to protest atrocities in Gujarat

unaOver 30 Dalits tried to take their own lives in Gujarat.

They say their drastic attempt was a protest against the public beating of four low-cast Dalit men by cow protection vigilantes. Psychiatrists however say their extreme response could be a case of mass hysteria.

The recent video of four tannery workers skinning a dead cow, being stripped and beaten with sticks, allegedly by a Hindu hardline group in Una town sparked massive protests by Dalit groups. As the video gained traction online, some Dalit youth decided to commit suicide as an extreme form of protest.

Unfortunately there are no mental health facilities or resources available to the community. Sadly the suicides and attempted suicides have continued unabated.
