Delhi MLAs have accepted recommendations made by an independent committee, and have given themselves a 400% increase in their salary, that amounts to a payout of Rs.2.35 lakh each month. BJP MLAs opposed the bill saying it was not the right time for MLAs to take an increment.
The recommendations were made by a committee headed by former secretary of the Lok Sabha, PDT Achari after many MLAs of the ruling AAP complained they were unable to make ends meet with the existing pay package.
Several MLAs justified the rise, saying their wages were insufficient as they now have the added responsibility of running a constituency office and meeting social obligations.
There were concerns that the amendments would make Delhi MLAs the highest paid in the country, but sources said the large share of the enhanced wages was meant for official expenses.
