Sunny Varkey, 58, a Dubai based education entrepreneur has pledged to give away more than half his wealth to help teachers around the world, by signing Bill Gates’ popular philanthropic campaign called “The Giving Pledge”.
The campaign was founded by US magnate Warren Buffet and Microsoft founder Bill and wife Melinda Gates to help address society’s problems by inviting the world’s wealthiest individuals and families to commit to giving more than half of their wealth to philanthropic and charitable causes.
Varkey said he has always believed that education is key to fixing many of the world’s greatest problems such as violence, poverty and health. He is the founder of Gems Education, the world’s leading education provider, that covers some 140,000 students across the world from over 153 nationalities. He is also founder of the Varkey Foundation that in 2014 launched the Global Teacher Prize, a $1 million prize to celebrate the teaching profession.
