During a Hindu ritual in Jalandhar, a devotee was walking barefoot on red-hot coal embers with his 6-year-old son Kartik in his arms, when he lost his balance and dropped the child on the burning coals.
Bystanders rushed to the rescue and took Kartik to hospital after his other family members refused to go with him, saying they had faith in God to heal him.
The boy was admitted in the emergency ward with burn injuries on his limbs and one side of his trunk. The doctor said the father also sustained 15 percent burns that will take at least a week to heal.
Some 600 devotees had gathered for the festival in honour of the goddess Maa Maariamma. Some years ago a mother carrying her daughter also slipped and fell on the burning surface during the ritual.
