Four Mumbai schoolboys between 15-16 years old have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping their classmate who lived in the same area and with whom they sometimes studied together. They also recorded a video and circulated it on WhatsApp.
Police say the boys were produced in court, then sent to a juvenile reform home while further investigations are carried out.
An officer said the girl was first raped on November 8 when one of the accused phoned her and invited her to his home allegedly for help with his studies. When she arrived there she was gang-raped. She was also assaulted several times since, on threats they would release the video, which they did anyway.
The victim’s father is dead and her mother works abroad, so she lives with her grandmother, aunt, and sister.
The video was shared on WhatsApp and someone sent it to the girl’s aunt who got the victim to reveal what had happened.
A case of gang rape has now been registered and the strict Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been invoked against the accused rapists.
