A video of a policeman being pushed into a pond and a youth trying to drown him in Kalyan, near Mumbai, during the ongoing Ganesh festival has gone viral and infuriated Mumbaikars over the growing violence against police personnel.
Even as a volunteer of a Ganesh mandal tried to repeatedly push the policeman’s head into the pond meant for Ganesh immersion, 3 more youths attacked him when he came out of the water with the miscreant.
All the police officer Niteen Dagale, 38, wanted to do was bring some order at the Teesgaon Talao when several devotees had gathered for the immersion. A large crowd of people waited in the queue to perform the ritual when some volunteers were not allowing others as they did not want to stand in the queue. Music from the drums was in full force when Dagale asked them to stop the music and decided to try and do the immersion himself, a move that angered the miscreants who pulled him into the pond then attacked.
Police are still to nab the four culprits and offences have been registered against them.
Sadly the incident comes in the wake of several attacks on police personnel taking place.
Congress Leader of the Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil demanded the Maharashtra government publish a white paper on law and order in the state and performance of the Home Department.
