A 22-year old woman was raped by a driver and another man when she took a private mini-bus on her way home from the call centre where she worked in Bengaluru. The men allegedly drove around for three hours and repeatedly assaulted her before dumping her near a temple.
Home Minister KJ George was speaking to the media on the case that has drawn a lot of attention in Bengaluru, and said “How can you call it gang rape? Gang rape means four or five people”.
The Minister’s untimely comment drew criticism from National Commission of Women Chairperson Lalitha Kumarmangalam, who said George is another example of someone in a responsible post who comments thoughtlessly on the issue of violence against women.
In an effort to dilute the situation George said “In strict technical terms” the case was a gang-rape case, though a ‘gang’ usually implies more than two people.
