Goa Deputy CM Francis D’Souza has defended his government’s decision to seek a pardon for former cabinet colleague Francisco Xavier Pacheco, who is in jail for assaulting a government official.
Mr D’Souza justified his government’s action, saying slapping a government official is a ‘minor offence’. He also defended his support for a pardon for Pacheco and the release of the former cabinet official who has already served 2 of his 6-month sentence.
The CM’s move has been roundly criticised by activists and political opponents with one activist calling it a mockery of Justice.
Pacheco leader of BJP ally Goa Vikas Party is also accused of abetting the suicide of his girlfriend. He surrendered on June 1.
