Government cheques given to farmers bounce !

Compensation cheques issued by the Akhilesh Yadav led Uttar Pradesh government to farmers in Mathura whose crops were destroyed by rains and hailstorms, bounced.

District officials said though Rs.3 crore was deposited in the SBI account, due to a ‘technical error’ between two banks the money was not transferred to the Bank of India in time.

Authorities have now issued instructions to banks in Uttar Pradesh not to deny compensation to the farmers and ensure payment on presentation of the cheques.

The district magistrate said thus far 60,000 cheques have been distributed and payment to the affected farmers has been ensured, and to provide speedy payment four banks have been selected in Chhatta Tahsi for the purpose.
