In the Aavdipurhal village of Laskar Haridwar, Uttarakhand, a couple were about to exchange garlands and take their wedding vows when the groom’s ex-girl friend strode up to the stage and slapped the bridegroom several times as the guests watched shocked.
The woman said she had been in a relationship with the man for many years and had entered into a court marriage with him. She threatened to have him arrested if he dared marry another woman.
Members of the groom’s family calmed the woman down and after she left the wedding venue the groom was in for another shock. His bride refused to continue with the wedding rituals, saying she would not marry a man who showed such scant regard for women. Her own family took her side and asked the groom and his family to leave.
One witness said the two families decided not to approach the police so the matter was taken to the panchayat who were requested to find them a solution. After hearing the details the panchayat suggested the bride consider marrying the groom’s younger brother instead.
The bride and her family accepted the suggestion and the marriage was solemnised shortly after.
