Gurgaon to be renamed Gurugram

BACKgurgaonThe Harayana government has decided to change the name of its largest city Gurgaon to Gurugram, and the neighbouring Mewat district will be named Nuh.

One state government spokesman said the decision to change the name has been taken on the basis of representations received at several fora that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as Gurugram.

Gurgaon with a population of 1.7 million is a leading financial and industrial hub and Gurugram is said to be its historical name since the times of Guru Dronacharya. It was a great centre of education.

Gurgaon’s growth started in the 1970s when Maruti Suzuki India established a manufacturing plant there and today, it has local offices of more than 250 Fortune companies.

Mewat that used to be a part of Gurgaon district earlier was also known as Nuh back in the day. It is also known for a large concentration of Jat Muslims.
