Hundreds take part in Delhi Gay Pride Parade

Hundreds of members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community participated in the annual Delhi Gay Pride Parade, now in its seventh year. The parade continued to garner support from people of all walks of life, especially students, who mingled with a group of over 700 people, and danced with them to the sound of drumbeats and whistles, in their campaign for freedom from the myopic mindset of society and acceptance of their existence. The streets of Connaught Place were arrayed with a rainbow of colours of balloons, flags, masks and scarves that accompanied the marchers, who this year marched for 'freedom' and saw many members finally coming out of the closet and revealing their faces. The LGBT community protested the 2013 Supreme Court decision that upheld the section of the Indian Penal Code that bans gay sex. As one transgender said, "This is the day we get together to celebrate our existence and hope the stigma will fade away some day."
