Voters queue to cast their ballots braving the scorching sun and a lurking Maoist threat. An average 60% of voters exercised their franchise at a polling centre in the village of Banbira in Samstipur district of Bihar state (Oct 12). They came on elephants, horses and bullock carts singing folk songs. India is the world’s largest working democracy. Experts are still wondering how a country with a diverse population of over 1.2 billion manages to conduct free and fair elections in a peaceful manner.
