Ganesh Chaturthi, the Hindu festival celebrated to honour the elephant god Ganesha, is considered auspicious throughout India because it is believed that any new activity begun on this day will be completed without any hurdles. Lord Ganesh is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Maharashtra’s most widely celebrated festival. And the most popular Community Ganesh Idol is the “Lalbagh cha Raja” in Mumbai. Each year the organisers have a unique and different decor theme. Millions come to do ‘darshan’ waiting in lines which extend 5 kms and can take upto 20 hours ! The idol’s design is patented, sculpted by Santosh Kambli, the third generation of a family that has been making the idol since 1935. Celebrations come to an end with the immersion of the huge idols in water bodies symbolising the seeing-off of the lord’s journey towards his abode, taking all the misfortunes of mankind along with him.
