It was high drama at the session’s court in south Mumbai and Salman Khan’s Bandra home on May 6. While celebrities and Bollywood stars descended on Galaxy Apartments from late Tuesday night, his family members stayed with him throughout the night. Hundreds of fans thronged the area all night and all of Wednesday. Television crews flocked the building. After Salman left for court, the action shifted to south Mumbai. There was elaborate security outside the court complex, as hundreds of fans stood on the roads awaiting the outcome of the case. Salman was sentenced to five years jail for his involvement in the 2002 hit-and-run case. He was charged of running over pavement-dwellers while driving his four-wheel-drive under the influence of alcohol. While the police initially filed charges of rash driving and negligence – which would have got him a lighter sentence – the police had to press more serious charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, after a public furore. Bollywood stars and other celebrities began rooting for the actor, tweeting their support. Social media went into overdrive as fans and supporters backed the actor and critics blasted them. There was some relief after his lawyers managed to get an interim bail from the Bombay High Court later in the evening.
