Drought in a region of Western India is compelling men to take on additional wives to make sure their households have enough drinking water ! They take a second or third wife just to fetch water from far off wells. Known as “water wives” the women, often widows or single mothers regain respect in conservative rural India. When the water wife, who does not usually share the marital bed, becomes too old to continue, the husband sometimes takes a third and younger spouse to fetch water. Polygamy is illegal in India, but in the villages nobody seems to bother.
