This has prompted the ministry to intensify its diarrhoea control programme to reach out to 10 crore children this year, up from 6.3 crore last year.
The main reasons for diarrhoeal attacks among children are contaminated water and food, malnutrition, inadequate sanitation, and lack of immunization. Diarrhoea deaths are usually clustered in the summer and monsoon months
Additional secretary to the health ministry CK Mishra said it may not be possible to stop the incidence of diarrhoea by intervention but prevent deaths. A new initiative called Intensified Diarrhoea Control Fortnight 2016 is aimed at targeted intervention for diarrhoea across the country through trained health workers.
By the distribution of ORS and ORS Zinc given to children who are already suffering from diarrhoea the government has managed to prevent around 21 lakh hospitalisations and deaths in the last one year.
