US Navy kills Indian fisherman of Dubai coast

A US Navy supply ship operating in the Strait of Hormuz, opened fire on a fishing boat near Jebel Ali Port in Dubai. A spokesman for the US Navy's Bahrain based 5th Fleet said a security team aboard the USNS Rappahannock fired on the boat after it disregarded warnings and raced towards the ship. One Indian fisherman and three others, also Indians were seriously injured. The dead fisherman has been identified as Sekar and the injured are Muniraj, Panpuvan and Murugan who all hail from Ramanathapuram. The President of the Karaiyur Fishermen's Association said the fishermen were working for Dubai fishing companies on a daily wage basis. India has called upon the United Arab Emirates to probe the circumstances of the tragic incident.
State Bank increases fixed deposit interest by 0.25% for NRIs

The State Bank of India has increased its interest rate on fixed deposits for NRIs by 0.25 percent. This implies term deposits between 3 and 5 year periods in rupee terms will attract 9 percent against the existing 8.75 percent. Interest rates for other maturities have been left unchanged. State Bank of India last revised interest rates on NRE deposits in rupee terms on April 24. Meanwhile subsidiary State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, as well as the Bank of India reduced interest rates on fixed deposits for resident Indians by 0.25 percent on select maturities.
Pakistan cricket team to tour India in December

India's Cricket board has announced that it was decided to resume cricketing ties with Pakistan by inviting the Pakistan cricket team to tour India in December for three One Day Internationals in Chennai, Calcutta and Delhi and two Twenty20 matches that will be played in Bangalore and Ahmedabad. The Pakistan Cricket Board welcomed the proposal and said millions of fans will be delighted. Cricketing ties were suspended after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, blamed on a Pakistan based militant group. The Indian government approval is still needed for the series to go ahead, but analysts say this is just a formality. Observers say the proposal to resume cricketing ties is a sign of improving relations between the two countries.
NRI woman alleges rape in CID custody in Gujarat

An NRI woman who was in police custody on charges of land grabbing, complained that she was tormented, abused and physically manhandled by a police inspector and another person in the presence of a top CID official. The woman who complained at a Meghaninagar police station has been released on bail in the land-grabbing case in which she is accused of forging records to acquire a piece of land in Vadodara. Meanwhile the allegations of rape against the CID officials has been handed over to the Women Cell, who are investigating the allegations.
Reputed Bangalore developer dupes NRI of Rs.6 million

UAE NRI Juliana D'Souza originally from Bangalore responded to an ad by Skyline Construction and Housing of Bangalore that said residential projects approved and financed by HSBC were available for NRIs. Ms D'Souza answered the ad and approached the company, then selected a flat and paid through a loan from HSBC. The sale agreement was signed and D'Souza made the full payment but the company did not construct the apartment even five years later. The company also evaded her enquiries in a clear demonstration that they were out to defraud customers living abroad. Based on her complaint, police have registered a case of cheating against Skyline.
