BrahMos missile successfully fired from Navy frigate

India's 290 km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile was successfully test-fired from the Navy's Russian-built guided missile frigate INS Tarkash, off the coast of Goa. BrahMos officials said the vertical launch configuration of the missile enhances the stealth capabilities of the ship as the missiles are under the deck and not exposed. Jointly developed by India and Russia, the BrahMos is capable of carrying a conventional warhead of 300 kg and can cruise at a maximum speed of 2.8 Mach.
Gujarat launches unique 'HEART' helpline for women in distress

It is known as a Help Emergency Alert Rescue Terminal (HEART) and is a helpline that will provide immediate help to harassed women through mobile phones or a land line. All a women needs to do is make a missed call to the toll-free number 1091 and control room cops will identify and caller and the nearest police patrol van will be rushed to the rescue within 10 minutes. Some 10 close contacts of the caller will also be informed through SMS if she has registered with HEART. WizzoTech developed the unique automated system. After the pilot project launch in Ahmedabad, HEART will be introduced in other parts of Gujarat. A website has also been launched for enhanced security. Crimes against women are on the increase in Ahmedabad, and Gujarat has seen 2577 rape cases and 6 serious cases of gang-rape in 10 years.
'Consensual sex with intention to marry is not rape' : SC

The Supreme Court while hearing a case in which a man was accused and charged with rape after he failed to marry the girl with whom he had consensual sex on the promise of marriage, cannot be termed rape, even though the marriage did not take place. The Court said consent is an act of reason accompanied by deliberation and the mind considering the good and bad on each side, and there is a clear distinction between rape and consensual sex in such a case. It called rape the most morally and physically reprehensible crime in society as it is an assault on the body, mind and privacy of the victim. It said the girl was 19 years old at the time and had adequate intelligence and maturity to understand the significance and morality associated with the act she was consenting to. The lower court in Haryana had convicted the accused to seven years in jail that was upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High court. The Supreme Court has acquitted the man who had already served 3 years of the 7 year sentence.
Dara Singh's son arrested for links with spot-fixing scam

The late wrestler and actor Dara Singh's son, Vindoo, the winner of the third season of the reality show Big Boss, has been arrested with two others for having links with bookies. The men were produced before a magistrate's court and remanded to police custody till May 24.
India, China improve bilateral relations and co-operation

After delegation-level talks between PM Manmohan SIngh and his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang, agreements were signed to improve bilateral relations and enhance trade with three working groups under the Joint Economic Group, namely, Services Trade Promotion working Group, Economic and Trade Planning Cooperation Group and Trade Statistical Analysis Group. The two countries have set a target of $100 billion for bilateral trade by 2015. China also agreed to make improvements to the existing facilities for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims and the Yatra will be conducted every year from May to September. India is expecting more exports from China and an MoU is to facilitate access to the China market in pharmaceuticals. A number of other agreements were on the agenda that proposes concrete deliverables to constitute and define the detailed mandate of the Working Groups.
