The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce president said Canada was not willing to engage with India much, till a few years ago when it supported India in the Nuclear Suppliers Group in 2008. Now, PM Modi’s visit has started a new era in the two countries relationship, as Canada signed the agreement to supply uranium to India and overall Canadians are showing more interest in India now.
More high level delegations have also started visiting each others’ countries to explore new areas of cooperation including infrastructure investment, projects and real estate. Also the new streamlined Canadian immigration rules have enabled more skilled Indians to go to Canada.
Canadian universities and colleges are also rushing to India to tie up with institutions and even set up campuses there. Direct fights by Air Canada also operate the Toronto-Delhi sector, making tourism another important area of growth.
Interestingly per capita, the Canadian NRI community is the biggest Indian diaspora group anywhere in the word.
