India is third largest passport issuing country

Quoting External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, Muktesh K Pardeshi joint secretary (PSP and CPO) said India is the third largest passport issuing country in the world and accounts for 14 percent of passport issuance, ranking it third after China and the US. Pardesh read Swaraj's speech after she had to cancel a visit to Shillong to inaugurate the Shillong Passport Seva Kendra. Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma said the Shillong Passport Seva Kendra will greatly benefit people of the state as they will no longer have to go to Guwahati to obtain the travel document. Swaraj also told of the government's plan to set up 16 more Passport Seva Kendras and introduce a new generation of e-passports in 2015-16, as well as the procurement of high capacity passport printers.
