India issues voting guidelines for NRIs

ISSUEnrivotingThe State Election Commission has issued guidelines for NRIs to exercise their franchise in the local government elections.

The guidelines dictate that the electoral registration officers take 5 copies of the voters’ list of NRIs and hand over 4 copies to the returning officers concerned, and when NRIs reach the polling station to cast their votes, they should furnish the original passport as identification.

Since the commission has prepared an exclusive voters list of NRIs, polling officers have been told to mark the details of the serial numbers of such votes in the voter register.

For identification voters could present a voter ID card issued by the commission, a passport, a driving licence, PAN card, Aadhar card and SSLC book with a photo as ID proof.
