India now tops the list of countries of origin for highly skilled migrants to the 34 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD, which are the European countries, USA, Canada and Australia.
The OECD report also highlighted the growing importance of the Asian diaspora. An earlier report pointed out that the top five destinations for Indian migrants are Australia, Germany, USA, Canada and UK. The significant number of overseas Indian’s remitted $71 billion to India in 2014.
With 6.25 lakh students in OECD countries in 2012, China is the leading country of origin followed by India with 1.68 lakhs.
