India to raise issue of UK visa law with Britain

ISSUEresidentIndia’s Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that India will convey its concerns to the UK authorities concerning the new British immigration law that will impact professionals earning less than 35,000 pounds annually.

According to the new rule that will come into effect from April, professionals living and working in Britain on a Tier-2 visa who earn less than 35,000 pounds a year, can at the end of five years of their stay in the country, be deported. Given that of the 55,589 Tier-2 sponsored visa applications cleared in 2014-15, nearly 31,058 were for Indians, thus thousands may be affected by the new law.

In fact over the years Indian professionals have formed the largest category of individuals issued such visas by the UK.

Sitharaman said India has also taken up similar issues concerning visa rules of the US government, at the World Trade Organisation.
