Lawyer Chandan Kumar Singh shocked many Indians when he tried to sue Hindu God Ram, the hero of the Ramayana who is revered by millions. Singh said he did so because he felt Lord Ram was unjust to his wife Sita and he wanted a court in Bihar to acknowledge the fact.
The court was not convinced and rejected Singh’s plea saying it was impractical. A group of Singh’s colleagues accused him of seeking publicity and one, also a lawyer, sued him for defamation.
Undeterred by the criticism Singh believes he has a valid case and quotes from religious scriptures to support his argument. He also rejected allegations he was merely seeking publicity, saying he filed the case because one cannot talk of respecting women in modern day India when a God did not treat his wife with respect. He admits the negative reactions have surprised him.
