Indian pleads not guilty in 1999 US murder case

CRIusawantAfter 16 years on the run, Balkumar Singh 37, who was once one of ‘America’s Most Wanted’ for the 1999 murder shooting of Abzal Khan, 19, outside a suburban New York wedding, was arrested in Trinidad.

Singh pleaded not guilty to murder, assault, weapons and other charges and was ordered held without bail during his appearance in New York recently. As he was not represented by an attorney a judge said a court-appointed attorney will represent him at his next court appearance.

Singh did however apologise during his arraignment in a Long Island courthouse saying “I am sorry for the pain I caused the family”

Reports at the time of the crime said police believed the gunman had asked a girl to dance and argued with her date, and later he was waiting outside and as the guests left the wedding he opened fire killing Khan and a second man was shot in the leg.
