The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is offering passengers who do not get their wait listed tickets confirmed, an option to convert it into an airline ticket at a competitive fare.
The Railway has already tied up with budget carrier Go Air and sold around 100 tickets in the past month.
The scheme applies to tickets booked at least 3 days prior to the date of the journey and flight tickets are made available only for the day of the train journey or a day after that. IRCTC send e-mails to wait listed passengers who want to use the scheme that is available to passengers who book tickets from the sleeper class to AC classes. The airline ticket for these passenger is cheaper by 30 to 40 percent.
IRCTC spokesperson Sandip Dutta said they have also entered into an understanding with SpiceJet under the scheme and plan to include other domestic carriers as well.
