Indian nationals in New Zealand are being targeted by scam callers posing as immigration officials, and demanding money.
The callers claim they are calling from the Immigration New Zealand offices and tell the victim there has been a problem with the visa or related information and demand a sum of money. They have been using numbers that show up as the Immigration Contract Centre, but with a variation in the digits.
The scammers who are aggressive and authoritative ask that the money be transferred to a Western Union account or the victims will face serious consequences including deportation.
One News channel has said the calls are not from the authorities and warn people not to take note of the scammers.
Over 100,000 NRIs currently live in New Zealand.
