India's foreign secretary Sujatha Singh unceremoniously sacked

The government announced the abrupt 'curtailment of tenure of foreign secretary Sujatha Singh with immediate effect' A move that has surprised and drawn the attention of the media in India. Ms Singh was appointed as India's top foreign service diplomat in August 2013 and she was due to retire in eight months. Observers say the way in which Ms Singh was dismissed is unusual, and she is the first foreign secretary to be removed unceremoniously since Rajiv Gandhi removed AP Venkateswaran in 1987.
